The Miller Public Library Summer Reading Club, Summer Celebration was held through the months of June and July. An exciting summer with 116 children signed up to read books during those months. They were challenged to read so that their brains didn’t go to “mush” over the summer. Each child sets a goal, and when they accomplish their goal, they receive a free book, prize, bookmark and coupon. Incentitive sheets were given to challenge students to write poems, stories and complete activity sheets.

The average attendance for the eight weekly programs ranged from 57-75.  The celebration included a presentation of “How to Bathe Your Pet” by Anna Dake Bowles. Three dogs participated! Using plastic cups and washcloths, everyone made their own “bubble-making machine.” Hot dog, chips and drinks were provided by the Miller Christian Service Center. Water balloons and water relays were enjoyed at the end of the program.

The person who read the most books was Jackie Smith. She read 132 books, and received a free meal and dessert from Mingles Restaurant. Other students enjoyed free soft serve ice cream cones from the Suzy -Q of Miller, Mazzio’s Pizza and McDonald’s from Mt. Vernon also provided coupons to encourage kids to keep reading. CPO, a Springfield business, provided coupons for even more free books.

Plan now to sign up for next summer’s session. We want to thank the many parent volunteers who helped make  this program a huge success.

Story hour for children ages 3-5 will begin on September 2 at 10 a.m. If you have any questions, please call 417-452-3466.
