Mrs. Fearnow's summer school class studied the Civil War. The main focus of our study was on the state of Missouri and battles that took place in our state. Students also enjoyed studying confederate guerrilas, and Kansas jayhawkers. A primary document about the burning of the Greenfield Courthouse during this period was studied. That event happened in October of 1863. We also had a lot of fun learning about the battle that took place on the square of Greenfield on October 18th, 1864, where a unit from Dadeville came to chase confederate guerrilas out south of the Kings Point area. Samuel Acuff of the Federal Army Garrison was killed. Also of interest was the two cavalry units from Dadeville. These units were lead by Captains Theodore Switzler and Clark Wright. These units took part in the Wilson's Creek Battle. on Thursday, June 11th, we toured Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. The class enjoyed the museum, lighted map scene, and touring the area. We were thrilled to find an actual photo of Captain Switzler from the Dadeville unit at the museum. We had studied General Lyon whom was killed during that battle on August 10, 1861, on Bloody Hill, so it was really exciting to see the actual location. We were also thrilled with a tour of the Ray House that was used as an army hospital during and after the battle.
The volunteer, John that gave our tour was phenomenal, and very knowledgeable. Our class enjoyed a sack lunch provided by the school, and then set off for a quick tour of the Nathan Boone Homestead. We enjoyed our day tremendously, and learned so much from seeing all the artifacts and actual locations. Cletis McConnell, was our bus driver and we want to thank him, and Tyler's, Grandma Marilyn for going with us and helping where needed.
