The Greenfield fifth grade attended a survival field trip at Hulston Mill Park on October 21. This field trip was based off of the book Hatchet. The students read and did activities with this book in class. The field trip is their culminating activity. The students participated in various survival activities. They started off working in groups. Then, the students were split up and had to work alone. They competed in the Ultimate Survivor contest. They had to show that they were observant, physically fit, and willing to do the challenges presented to them. At the end of the day, we were down to only two contestants, Jalen Roby and Casey Short. After a survival question and answer session, the winner was announced. Casey Short had squeaked by in answering one more question correctly. All the students had a great time and were very well-behaved. They were able to relate to the book and build a knowledge of survival techniques.
