The 2009 high school football season kicks off this Friday night, August 28, 2009 with Greenfield, Lockwood and Miller all playing opening games. Teams have been practicing since Monday, August 10, and played in jamborees on Friday, August 21. All three area teams compete in the Spring River Valley Conference and are assigned to Class 1 state playoff action. The Greenfield Wildcats, 11-2 in 2008, host SRVC foe Diamond and Lockwood, 5-6 in 2008, travel to Rich Hill, a WEMO school and Miller 10-2 in 2008, goes to Liberal for a conference game. All games begin at 7:00 p.m.
Jamie LaSalle, the dean of SRVC coaches, is the Wildcats head coach, while Clay Lasater, a Lockwood High graduate, is the head man for the Tigers. Dusty Baldwin is the new coach for the Miller Cardinals. All three teams made the playoffs in 2008, with Greenfield advancing to the state semifinals before losing to Tipton. Miller eliminated Lockwood and then Thayer beat Miller and Thayer finished second in the state to champ Orrick.
District assignments for the 64 teams in Class 1 are District 5 - Greenfield, Liberal, Osceola and Rich Hill. District 4 - Lockwood, Jasper, Sarcoxie and Joplin McAuley. District 3 - Cabool, Miller, Marionville and Thayer.
In girls sports. Dadeville has begun their softball season and are competing in the Humansville tournament this weekend.
Miller meets Ash Grove and Lockwood goes to Everton for volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Greenfield’s first volleyball match is Sept 8 at Everton.
