Mike Bilyeu has been selected as the next Employee of the Month at Pennington Seed, Inc. in Greenfield. Mike works in the Maintenance Department and was nominated by Tim Black, Maintenance Manager. In his nomination, Tim wrote:
“Mike has a great work attitude and is always willing to tackle any task. He isn’t one to complain about conditions. He is very concerned about the company and doing the right thing. He and Terry Dunn take care of our lift services and many of our truck repairs. Mike has been here 5 years and brings a knowledge of the Pellet Mill to us, having worked there before coming to the shop. Mike is a valuable employee and we are lucky to have him.”
Mike is the 2nd Shift Foreman and came to Pennington Seed in January of 2007. He started work in the Pellet Mill as an operator and when a position opened up in Maintenance, he put in his transfer. He had previously worked in Maintenance under Carl Robison for almost a year and knew that’s where he wanted to be again. “I’ve always loved working on machinery,” said Mike, “I grew up on a farm and working on the equipment was just part of the job. I’ve always been a mechanic or worked in a field along those lines.” After several years in Maintenance, the opportunity came up for a 2nd shift foreman. Mike applied for the position and got the job.
He likes working at Pennington Seed and said, “I like the people and the home atmosphere. My co-workers are friends, rather than just someone I work with.” With the economy the way it is, Mike also appreciates the opportunity to have insurance. Having worked in smaller, family-run businesses where he was responsible for his own insurance, he doesn’t take it for granted.
Mike is married to Melodey Bilyeu whom also works at Pennington Seed in the Mulch Department. She also works 2nd shift and they save money on the drive back and forth to their home in Stockton. They came to Springfield in the ‘80s from Manito, Illinois, on the suggestion of family members who already lived in the area. It was a time when “you couldn’t buy a job in central Illinois.” They were in Springfield for about 5 years and then returned to Illinois where Mike got a job as a millwright in a steel mill. “You could see the air you breathed,” said Mike, “and after a while I had had enough.” The couple returned to Springfield and Mike worked for Loren Cook as a shear and brakeman making industrial fans. They missed the small town feel and started looking for a community with a smaller school system for their 2 boys whom were still at home. They found Stockton and it wasn’t long after they moved when Mike came to Pennington Seed.
Mike and Melodey were high school sweethearts and have been married for 31 years. They have four sons: Joshua, Brandon, Thomas, and Jonathan, along with 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. When Mike is not on the clock working on equipment and machinery at PSI, in his spare time he enjoys working on Dodge cars and trucks.
Thanks, Mike, for your efforts and congratulations on this honor.
