Lowell Pugh: 1932-2019

A life well lived. These words sum up Lowell Pugh. This area in Barton and Dade counties lost a true leader last week.

Lowell Pugh, my friend and friend to many in the area, passed away at 87 years of age.

Lowell was a Golden City native and he was the heart of Golden City and beyond.

He was a veteran, a husband, father, funeral home owner, hardware store owner, mayor, publisher and more. His love for the native prairies led him to work with the Missouri Prairie Foundation and other groups to preserve the prairies in Dade, Barton, and Jasper counties. He, with facts and wisdom, helped convince a wealthy donor from New York to help purchase prairie land in the area.

Lowell was a thinker; he studied and thought out ideas from other towns and businesses to see if they would apply to our area.

This area is better off due to the efforts, work and the life of Lowell Pugh.
