DCHD Recommendations for Celebrating Easter Under Stay At Home Order

by The Dade County Health Department

With Easter weekend approaching, the Dade County Health Department is urging everyone in the community to stay committed to social distancing and avoid in-person gatherings.

“We understand that church services and family gatherings are very important, especially this time of year,” said Administrator Pamela Allen. “However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is very important that people not get together in person. We just can’t risk spreading Coronavirus in our community.”

Many churches are finding ways to offer support and fellowship through innovative alternatives to mass gatherings. Some have moved their services online, through live video streaming and on Facebook. Others are hosting Zoom meetings or Bible study webinars. Others are making regular phone calls and sending cards to church members.

“While the way you celebrate religious traditions may be different this year, know that you are not alone,” said Allen. “This is a challenging time for all of us. We may come from different backgrounds or attend different churches, but we are one community. And we need to keep pulling together through this shared experience.”

Allen offers suggestions for safer ways to worship this Easter weekend:

- Look on social media for virtual services.

- Celebrate with family via video chat.

- Use digital tools or send letters to keep in touch with friends and family.

- Cook traditional foods at home to enjoy the familiar tastes and smells of the holiday.

- Consider a smaller celebration with your immediate family now, and hold a larger celebration when the pandemic is over.

“The response to COVID-19 may mean social distancing for quite some time,” added Allen. “We understand that you may be tired of staying home. You may be bored, or frustrated. But we urge you to keep on, for the sake of our whole community. We will get through this, but we need everyone to do their part to keep our community safe.”
