Velma Leigh Spain

Velma Leigh Spain, of Greenfield, Missouri, departed this life on Saturday, January 7, 2017, in Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missuri, at the age of 95 years.

She was born on March 10, 1921, in Lawrence County, Missouri, to Herman and Dollie Clementine (Hill) Mohwinkle. Velma was united in marriage to Ellis Warren Spain on May 15, 1937, in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
She was a member of Kings Point Baptist Church. Velma served as a nursery worker at her church, and also was V.B.S. worker for over 5 decades. She enjoyed music. As a teenager, she played with Roy Rogers and his band until he decided to move out to California. Velma was very talented in wood working and making crafts.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Herman and Dollie Mohwinkle; her husband, Ellis Spain; one son, Wayne Spain; one daughter, Louise Houston; four brothers, Edward Mohwinkle, Marion Mohwinkle, Johnny Mohwinkle, and Melvin Mohwinkle; two sisters, Fern Mohwinkle and Kathrine Shoemaker; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Survivors include two sons: LeRoy Spain and his wife, Linda, of South Greenfield, Missouri; and Neal Spain of Wichita, Kansas; one daughter, Andrea Cross and her husband, Charles, of Greenfield, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great- grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, in Kings Point Baptist Church. Burial followed in Kings Point Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Greenfield Funeral Chapel.
