James Smirl

James R. Smirl, 78, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. He was born on August 13, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Kenneth Wayne and Daisy Pearl (Tipton) Smirl. 

On June 30, 1969, James married Linda Matney and they shared over 57 years together.

James faithfully served his country in the United States Army. After retiring, he worked for the City of Ash Grove for as long as his health allowed. He enjoyed football, especially cheering on the Chiefs, and loved spending time outdoors fishing. Above all, James was a good man who dearly loved his family.

James is survived by wife, Linda Smirl; children: Tina Strait and husband, Steven; James Smirl and wife, Melanie; grandchildren: Nicholas Syers, Dalton Syers, Jordan Smirl, Kayla Smirl, Austin Smirl; great grandchildren: Kylie, Brooklyn, Ummel, Macie, Kai, Harper, Camilla, Asher; siblings: Chuck Smirl, Robert Smirl, Ricky Smirl, Donnie Smirl, Pam Camb, Judy Slazk, Paula Smirl; several nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Daisy Smirl.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri.
